In December 2018 a friend approached the Black Sheep Restaurant in Whakamarama with an idea to convert their unused conference room into a gift shop. She asked myself and two other friends to help and in February 2019, after painting walls, collecting and painting furniture, shelving and display screens, we opened not only the gift shop but a gallery space for exhibitions as well.
Our aim was to provide local artists and artisans a friendly, inexpensive and relaxed place to exhibit and sell their work. Most of these people are mums and retired folk who have been creating for years but had never had the confidence to show their work in public. The work they have been bringing us is amazing and we are proud that everything sold at the Atrium Gallery is lovingly handmade by our local talent.
We are a non-profit enterprise run by volunteers and all money we raise goes towards advertising, signage, competition prizes etc. I am very proud to be a part of this project.
